Book Recommendations if Your Hogwarts House is Hufflepuff

If you aren’t already aware, I’m giving book book recommendations based on Hogwarts Houses this week. My last blog post focused on Gryffindors, so next up of Hufflepuff. An underrated house, in my opinion! Hufflepuffs are dependable, open-minded and compassionate amongst many other admirable qualities, so I focused on finding books that reflect strong friendships and the hard work of Hufflepuffs.

CONTEMPORARY

CLASSICS

• Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery

• The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

For the tolerant Hufflepuffs . . . the ones that will be a friend to another in the unlikeliest of times.

• Persuasion by Jane Austen

Twenty-seven-year old Anne Elliot is Austen’s most adult heroine. Eight years before the story proper begins, she is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she precipitously breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy. The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret. When later Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain, he finds Anne’s family on the brink of financial ruin and his own sister a tenant in Kellynch Hall, the Elliot estate. All the tension of the novel revolves around one question: Will Anne and Wentworth be reunited in their love?

For the patient Hufflepuffs . . . the ones who know you need to sometimes wait for something great.

FANTASY

• Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic.

For the loyal Hufflepuffs . . . the ones that will do anything for those that they love.

• An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

• Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse – Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena – Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

For the Cedric Diggorys of Hufflepuff . . . the ones who aren’t afraid of a challenge, but have a little help along the way.

If you’re a Hufflepuff, let me know what you think in the comments. Arguably, Percy Jackson could be Gryffindor, but I think the friendship, trust and loyalty between the characters in those books is rather Hufflepuff.
